MST3k, My New Obsession October 9, 2007
The most random thing has happened to me this week. After searching for a show to watch on one of those streaming video sites, I came across a show that I used to watch with my dad a long time ago, when I was a kid. Mystery Science Theater 3000. I remembered it being somewhat entertaining, either that or I remember my dad laughing at it. Anyways, I pulled up an episode. My girlfriend, Sarah, was protesting while the horribly corny intro played. I assured her that the show was good and to give it a chance.
As soon as I saw the silhouettes of Mike Nelson and his robot buddies, Tom Servo and Crow in the theater a rush of memories came flooding into my mind. All of a sudden I realize that this is an amazing show. After 5 minutes of their hilarious commentary over a horribly done B Christmas Movie from Mexico, I was hooked! Read the rest of this entry »
Detroit 97.1 Free FM is No More October 2, 2007
Let me preface this blog post by saying that I am a huge fan and critic of talk radio and that the talk radio in Detroit was mediocre at best. I would listen to it not because it was good by any means but rather because I wanted to see what they did wrong and what they did right so I wouldn’t make the same mistakes on my show. It was kind of a learning tool.
Talk radio in the motor city is DEAD. I was driving home from work yesterday and I put on 97.1 Free FM, which is the talk radio station here in Detroit, like I do everyday. I was expecting to either hear the voices of Deminski & Doyle (D&D) or a long winded commercial. Instead I heard one of the worlds most boring creations… Sports Talk. UGH. Once I realized that it was not a commercial I quickly pulled out my iPod and put on a podcast. Read the rest of this entry »
Making Progress + New Problems September 24, 2007
I come to work today and receive an IM from Matt telling me that the Rising Star Detroit site is done! FUCK YES. Huge weight off of my back. There are still a few modifications that need to be made but for the most part, its functional.
I am slowly making my way out of that stress pile. My only problem now is dealing with a completely incompetent hosting company. This company hosts my Wreckless Media Radio website and forum, my tech blog, this site, and a few others. The name of this horrible company is PowWeb Hosting, or as I like to call them PooWeb Hosting. All of my sites have about a 50% uptime. It’s a flip of a coin every time someone visits my site if it will be up or not. I have used a lot of hosting companies in the past, both good and bad, and nothing compares to the terrible service or PowWeb. They have taken on so many customers with their seemingly great deal on hosting, and cannot handle the amount of traffic that their customers pull in. The mysql server goes down about every 20 minutes. Read the rest of this entry »
Wreckless Media Radio September 21, 2007
I have been doing the whole talk radio thing for almost 2 years now and as of late I feel the show has been losing steam. Not that the shows have been bad by any means, but that I think the co-hosts are losing the dynamic that they used to have with me. Now that they are more comfortable with being on the show they are slowly trying to steal the spot-light. And don’t think I am being pampas and I want to be the star, its not like that at all. I am the host, I make the show run, I spend all of my free time working on the show, I bought all of the equipment, and I have been doing it a lot longer than they have.
Recently I am constantly being talked over and my jokes stepped on because everyone just wants to hear themselves talk. And it’s taking a wear on myself, the show, and the fans. Last week a concerned listener started a thread on our forum talking about this very issue and to my surprise a lot of listeners agreed. Read the rest of this entry »
Something Has to Change September 19, 2007
Like most people in the world, I HATE MY JOB. I am under paid, under appreciated, and stepped on because of my age. My salary would be doubled, doing the same work, if I was ten years older than I am now. So now I have to give up my window seat cubicle to someone else. This is bullshit. I’m pissed.
What I really want to do is start doing freelance. I would make more, be my own boss, and not have to deal with idiots all day. Or somehow develop Wreckless Media Radio to the point where I can live off of that.
Anyways, something HAS GOT to change, or I am gonna go crazy.
Up and Running September 17, 2007
After hours and hours of tedious, strenuous work I was able to get my desktop back up and running. The WMR fans will be pleased since they haven’t gotten a show for the past 2 weeks. But we will no longer have audio lagging issues or bad video quality. Matter of fact the show will look and sound better than ever.
After going to Chicago last weekend to visit Mike D. from Red Bar Radio and seeing his studio, it has inspired me to get my studio together. Our studio is great, don’t get me wrong. We have very professional equipment, a quite working space, with a cool overall ambiance with our logo’s colors as the studio’s color scheme. But… Its too fuckin’ small and it is a complete mess. Beer bottles, plastic wrap, cans, and dust litter the room. I really need to get in there and tighty up the place. Read the rest of this entry »
Stress Pile September 13, 2007
I am coining the term Stress Pile. What is a stress pile? A stress pile is when you suddenly find yourself buried up to your head with deadlines, responsibilities, and bad luck. Also Stress Pile is the best way to describe how I am feeling right now.
This stress pile snuck up on me. About a week ago I all of a sudden got this surge of anxiety while driving home from work. At first I didn’t know why. I started thinking about what could be causing this. Then the floodgates opened. I realized that I have a lot to be anxious about. As soon as I got home I pulled up a text document and made a list of things that I needed to get done. As soon as I was finished making the list the nervous feeling in my stomach subsided a bit because now I had a list of things I needed to do. Apparently I have been putting off a lot of things and deadlines were coming up. Here are a few things from my list that are causing me most of my anxiety: Read the rest of this entry »
New Site Design September 11, 2007
It seems like the only time I ever update my blog here at brianberris.com is when I am redesigning the site. Anyways, a few weeks ago I got some inspiration and I decided to revamp the site. I must say I am loving the design of it so far. I made it very web 2.0 looking. I also added a feature called BriSpy which is just my twitter account. This way you can keep tabs on me and what I am doing.
I am still trying to figure out a good way to handle photos. I may just use a flickr account and somehow integrate that into the site. For the time being I am using this nifty little flash image gallery. Unfortunately there is no easy way to keep track of photos, categories, and comments on them.
I haven’t had a personal blog in a long long time and I made a promise to myself that I would start one up again. So that is what this site’s blog will be. People keep telling me that I shouldn’t because if I say the wrong thing on it and a potential employer happens to see it, they might not hire me. Read the rest of this entry »
Wreckless Media Radio is coming… March 15, 2007
As you know Not Another Tech Podcast has been around for a year, and in that year we have grown from a tech show to a comedy show. I’m not exactly sure how (possibly the alcohol), but this is the natural direction the show has taken. After Joe left and we received the addition of the very funny Evil Greg and Bryan Corpolongo to our cast of co-hosts, it only makes sense to change the show to strictly professional talk comedy.
Due to the mass number of fans that we pull in every week just to listen to our insanely funny commentary on strange news, pop culture, and life stories, we have decided to remove the tech from the show and remove ‘podcast’ from our title. We are now Wreckless Media Radio.
Wreckless Media will not only be a internet radio show but also a vidcast. We will release In-Studio vidcasts as well as sketch comedy vids. It will be the same show that you love but with MORE content. Read the rest of this entry »
