The Nail in Detroit Talk Radio’s Coffin: Deminski & Doyle are Gone    January 2, 2008

We all knew that it was coming. We could hear the squawking of the Vultures months ago. Deminski and Doyle (D and D) are no more. The Day we have been dreading is among us.

As soon as 97.1 Free FM’s untimely death at the hands of CBS executives, all of us Detroiters let out a collective gasp of horror. All of our favorite shows were gone in a flash (and a lot of our not so favorite). Due to the overwhelming popularity of Deminski and Doyle, they were kind enough to spare us and move them from drive-home to mornings.

D and D have been in Detroit for almost 9 years. They embraced Detroit and in return we embraced them. They held a mirror up to life in Southeastern Michigan and we could see ourselves in it and relate. Besides being genuinely nice guys, they were damn good entertainers.

On December 14th they had their final show. Until today they have just been playing “best of’s”. Jeff Deminski and Bill Doyle were making 6 figures and the main reason they left is because of salary disagreements with CBS. So who has taken the place of the Detroit legends? Prepare to roll your eyes. Motor City Mornings… UGH! Former, mediocre Free FM show, Motor City Middays is back as a mornings show. Featuring the wretched snake, Jay Towers. I can’t even stand to hear him speak. He is so fake and hacky, it makes me cringe. He is a cookie cutter host that brings NOTHING new to the table.

Today was the first day of Motor City Mornings or as I like to call it Motor “Shitty” Mornings. I took a listen just because I was curious, and it is just as bad, if not worse than it was before. Jay is just so awful. He runs out of steam on a topic in about 2 minutes. You can just hear him trying to stretch a topic to fill the show. Lots of dead air. The only entertaining thing about Motor City Mornings is hearing Jay Towers fail miserably at doing radio. If you are entertained by uncomfortable open mic sets where no one is laughing, you may enjoy taking a listen for about 10 minutes. Anything more than that you’ll get bored with the cringe factor of the show.

So this is what they came up with to take the place of Deminski and Doyle? It figures. I mean would we expect anything better from CBS? Absolutely not.

So what’s in the future for Detroit’s Double D’s? We have no clue. I can tell you that they will not be returning to Detroit. They have both stated that they will not work under CBS which they say stands for “Cheap Beyond Suspicion”. Even if another Detroit station wanted to pick them up, they have a no-compete clause until 2009, which means they won’t be able to have a show that competes with any CBS shows. So say goodbye to D and D. Game over.

There is now NO reason to have 97.1 tuned in on your radio. This is the nail in the coffin.

As for hope? Podcasts. If you miss talk radio in Detroit and aren’t listening to podcasts yet, you are missing out. You can always find a show that is for you. I host the Detroit based internet radio show and podcast Wreckless Media Radio http://wrecklessmediaradio.com. It is a completely uncensored show and it burns down any rules and regulations of the FCC since they have no control over our content. We offend a lot of people that don’t get the humor. The point of the show is to make people laugh by any means necessary and half of the humor is trying to be as offensive as possible. It’s no holds barred, uncensored and completely politically incorrect. Which in my opinion, the world needs these days. People are such pussies and are offended way too easily. They need to toughen up and learn to laugh at themselves. Give us a try and I guarantee you will be hooked.

Well that’s my rant. I feel much better now. Long live D & D.

  1. Well, you are correct. D&D are gone. We all knew it was coming, but it didn’t make it any easier. CORRECTION: Their last day was SUPPOSED to be Dec. 14. They were told after their show on Dec. 7 that they were done and best-of’s would be running. I think this is the worst part of this whole situation. CBS pulled them off the air so that they could not have their last week, give the listeners a decent thanks and good-bye! I think this fact alone, after 8+ years pulling in so many listeners, that they screw them in the end. I got XM radio for Xmas, and now listen to Opie and Anthony. Detroit radio, may you “Rest In Peace.” I MISS D & D!

  3. Hey man good post. I’ve heard a few things that conflict with some of the things you’ve posted here. I was under the impression that D & D’s main sticking point was length of contract. They wanted a one year extension with a no non compete and CBS wanted to give them 2 years with a 6 month non compete. D & D wanted to shorter contract because they were upset with the way that CBS was jerking them around and didn’t want to be tied up with the company for another two and a half years. Also I believe it was their Agent Mike Novak who called CBS Cheap Beyond Suspicion not the guys themselves. I could be wrong on these things you know how these blogs and message boards give you 100 different stories. I’ll definatly check out your podcasts though my day isn’t filled with good radio anymore like it used to be circa 2005.
